Climate

Gauteng is said to offer one of the world's best climates: summer days are warm and wind free and winter days are crisp and clear. The city is situated high on the central highveld plateau of South Africa at an average altitude of 1 500 metres above sea level. It has an average annual rainfall of 850 millimeters, and a mean daily sunshine factor of 8,7 hours per day, one of the highest in the world.

Temperature

Pretoria has a delightfully mild climate, neither humid nor too hot for comfort. There are about six weeks of chill in mid-winter (from July to August). Summer, offering warm African sunshine followed by balmy nights, runs from October to March. The seasons are flexible, one running into the next, and summer habitually spills over into spring and autumn. The nights can be chilly particularly in winter.

Daily temperatures range between an average midsummer (January) maximum of 26ºC and an average winter (June) maximum of 16ºC with lower temperatures of about 5°C at night.

Rainfall

This is a summer-rainfall region. Between November and February summer thunderstorms produce flashes of lightning and brief but torrential afternoon downpours with occasional hail.

Rainfall varies from 600mm to 900mm per annum.
